Mark Olson is one of the Senior Designers at Valet Custom Cabinets & Closets. Mark has been with Valet since March 1999 and, along with experience that he gained prior to coming on board with us, has over 30 years experience in the home improvement industry. Over the years, he has “really had fun designing cabinetry for people with all sorts of garages filled with junk.” When Mark discovered a slow leak in his water heater, he finally had the chance to design his own custom garage! “My kitchen was the next home remodeling project my wife and I had in mind,” Mark said. “However, since the water heater needed replacing and the platform and sheetrock re-done, one thing led to another.”
So what does it look like when a designer gets to create his own garage? Let’s take a look!
Mark had the garage walls insulated, painted them bright red, added overhead lighting and completed the project with Valet’s epoxy flooring system. He went with white melamine cabinets, Satin Nickle bar pulls from Top Knobs, and a solid wood maple butcher block counter top.
Mark created several cabinets to help with his hobbies and sports. #1 on the list is his dedicated golf cabinet that perfectly fits two sets of clubs with shelves above for shoes and supplies.
Along with creating space for a refrigerator, an area for hanging his bike off of the ground was planned for, as well as space for storage bins to easily stack on top of the cabinets.
Epoxy floors are porous free, so there are no more stains from oils or paints. Also, the dust that typical garage concrete floors produce is absent with an epoxy coating. “This allows me to go barefoot in the garage, “ says Mark. “There is a standing joke that I ask people to wipe their shoes before entering my garage from the house to keep the dirt out. I feel like I’m in my house when I’m in the garage (adding 400 sq ft. of living space).”
Soon after Mark completed his garage, his neighbor asked to see it. “Then he had me out to design his cabinets featuring Satin Nickel hardware and an epoxy floor with Valet’s Yosemite finish that looks awesome with his Silver Tesla.”
